Good news is on the way for millions of disabled veterans and military retirees! Monthly benefit payments are set to increase by 3.6% in 2027, providing some welcome financial relief as Americans continue to deal with rising costs for groceries, housing, health care and everyday essentials.
The Social Security Administration officially announced the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on October 14, 2026. The increase is higher than the 2.8% adjustment in 2026 and represents the largest COLA in four years.
While any increase is welcome news, what does this mean for veterans, military retirees and their families? Let’s take a closer look.
How Much More Money Will Veterans Receive?
The amount of additional money veterans receive will depend on their current disability rating, whether they have eligible dependents and the benefits they currently collect.
For example, a veteran with a 100% VA disability rating and no dependents who currently receives approximately $3,939 per month can expect that amount to increase to roughly $4,080 in 2027. That’s an additional $142 per month, or approximately $1,700 annually.
Veterans with lower disability ratings will also see increases. Someone receiving $1,500 per month in disability compensation, for instance, would receive approximately $54 more each month under the new adjustment.
Although these increases may not cover every rising expense, they can provide some additional breathing room for veterans and families managing tight household budgets.
What About Military Retirees?
Military retirees will also benefit from the 2027 COLA, although the exact adjustment can vary depending on their retirement system and retirement date.
For a military retiree currently receiving $2,500 per month, a full 3.6% increase would mean an additional $90 monthly, bringing the total to approximately $2,590. Over a year, that’s an extra $1,080.
Most military retirees will receive the full adjustment, while certain retirees under the REDUX retirement system or those who retired recently may receive a different percentage.
When Will the Increase Take Effect?
The new cost-of-living adjustment takes effect December 1, 2026, for VA disability compensation. Veterans should generally see the higher amount reflected in their payment for December benefits, typically received at the beginning of January 2027.
Military retirees can expect the adjustment to be reflected in their retirement payments around the start of the new year, according to their applicable payment schedules.
And here’s another piece of good news: Veterans and retirees generally do not need to submit a new application to receive their COLA increase. Adjustments are applied to eligible existing benefits.
Why Is the Increase Higher This Year?
The annual COLA is designed to help federal benefits keep pace with inflation. It’s calculated using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which tracks changes in the prices of everyday goods and services.
Because consumer prices have continued to rise, the 2027 adjustment is larger than the increases announced for the previous two years.
Of course, a higher COLA also reflects a reality many veterans already know: Living expenses are becoming increasingly difficult to manage. From prescription medications and medical appointments to groceries, transportation and utility bills, everyday necessities continue to take a significant bite out of household budgets.
Other Veterans Benefits May Increase, Too
The adjustment also affects several additional benefits administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs, including Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) for eligible survivors, special monthly compensation and certain clothing allowances.
These increases are especially important for surviving spouses and veterans who depend on their monthly benefits to cover essential living expenses.
A Little More Financial Breathing Room in 2027
For veterans and military retirees living on fixed incomes, even a modest increase can make a meaningful difference. While the 3.6% COLA won’t eliminate the financial pressures many families face, it can help offset some of the rising costs that have become part of everyday life.
As 2027 approaches, veterans are encouraged to review their benefit statements, stay informed about updated VA compensation rates and plan their household budgets accordingly.
After years of service and sacrifice, our nation’s veterans and military retirees deserve financial security. This latest adjustment is one way to help protect the value of the benefits they’ve earned.
