In December, the veterans’ unemployment rate experienced a slight increase but concluded 2023 with the lowest monthly average in over two decades, as per data recently released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Approximately 261,000 veterans seeking employment faced full-time job challenges last month, resulting in an unemployment rate of 3%, up from 2.8% in November. The Department of Veterans Affairs announced several critical advancements in its veteran suicide prevention initiatives, including $52.5 million in new veteran suicide prevention grants, a new set of veteran suicide prevention public service announcements (PSAs), and, for the first time, statistics on the impact of VA’s new program offering free emergency medical care to veterans in acute suicidal crisis at any VA or non-VA health care facility.
