Maureen Carlson understands that a safe, healthy home is more than just a roof over one’s head—it’s a foundation for opportunity. As president and CEO of Rebuilding Together, a national nonprofit dedicated to critical home repairs and community revitalization, Carlson brings decades of leadership in health systems and social impact to the forefront of a mission that deeply supports the veteran community.
“Housing is the thread that connects health, equity and community,” Carlson said. “A safe, healthy home supports better physical and mental health, stronger families and more resilient communities. It’s where opportunity begins.”
A Clear Mission
Since joining the organization in 2024, Carlson has led a national network of affiliates working to repair and improve homes for vulnerable populations, especially veterans. “After serving our country, veterans should have access to a safe, accessible place to call home,” she emphasized. “Yet too many live in deteriorating housing, without the resources to make critical repairs.”
Rebuilding Together has made veterans a central focus of its mission. Since 2010, the organization has completed over 13,000 home and facility projects for veterans. These efforts include everything from replacing aging roofs and HVAC systems to installing accessibility ramps and handrails—critical modifications that allow veterans to remain independent and age in place.
Impactful Partnerships
This work is made possible through strong national and local partnerships. Lockheed Martin, for example, has been a standout collaborator, with more than 800 employees volunteering to assist veterans through Rebuilding Together projects. “Their support helps us go beyond home repairs—creating spaces of dignity, accessibility and safety,” Carlson said.
Recent projects have included refurbishing the American Legion Post 171 in Damascus, Maryland—a key hub for veteran community services—and upgrading a veteran’s home in Smyrna, Georgia, to address mobility issues. In both cases, Lockheed Martin volunteers played an active role, from installing vinyl plank flooring to building handrails and ramps.
Veterans Giving Back
But the impact extends beyond physical repairs. Veterans themselves are integral to Rebuilding Together’s efforts—not just as recipients of services, but as active community leaders and volunteers. “Their lived experience and deep understanding of service make them natural partners in our work,” said Carlson. “Whether helping to identify needs in their neighborhoods or rolling up their sleeves on a project site, veterans bring the same spirit of teamwork and commitment that defined their military service.”
Meeting Local Needs
Community collaboration is also key to determining where help is needed most. Local affiliates work closely with residents and organizations to identify pressing needs, particularly in underserved areas. “Nothing is more critical to what we do than collaboration,” Carlson added. “We tailor our response to the needs of each community—whether it’s preventing displacement, supporting older adults or responding to natural disasters.”
Scaling to Meet Demand
Looking ahead, Rebuilding Together is focused on scaling its efforts to meet a growing demand. “Millions of homes across the country are aging,” Carlson noted. “We’re working to ensure that neighbors aren’t forced to leave due to unsafe or inaccessible conditions.”
The organization invites veterans and veteran-focused groups to get involved—either by requesting services or by volunteering their time. “We encourage veterans to connect with their local Rebuilding Together affiliates,” said Carlson. “Whether you need assistance or want to give back, there’s a role for everyone in building safe, strong communities.”
