For Brian Britton, service has always been more than a duty—it’s a calling. From the cockpit of a Navy patrol aircraft to the boardrooms of America’s most iconic companies, Britton’s journey exemplifies how military-honed leadership can shape successful careers in business. Today, as president and CEO of Kilwins—a beloved American confectionery brand—Britton is achieving sweet success while staying true to his core values of service, discipline and joy.
Powered by Military Principles
Britton’s military background is foundational to his leadership style. A naval flight officer for nine years, he was recognized as one of the top-performing P-3 Orion Tactical Commanders in the fleet. He earned the Navy Commendation Medal for exemplary leadership. In high-pressure environments, Britton learned to maintain composure, remain mission-focused and inspire his team. These same skills now guide his leadership at Kilwins, where he emphasizes calm under pressure, compassionate tenacity and a relentless drive to “make more happy”—the brand’s simple but powerful mission.
The Corporate Climb
After earning a B.S. in Systems Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and an MBA from Harvard Business School, Britton built an impressive career with executive roles at Disney, Levy Restaurants, OTG Management and National Heritage Academies. Yet, it was the opportunity to lead and grow a values-driven franchise business that brought him to Kilwins in 2023. Now serving as both president and CEO, he leads with the same focus on character, commitment and competence that defined his military service.
Why Franchising Works
Kilwins, with its nearly 175 franchised locations across the U.S., offers hand-crafted chocolates, original recipe ice cream and warm customer experiences steeped in tradition. As a franchise system, Kilwins provides veterans a unique platform to channel their leadership, operational discipline and service mindset into business ownership—without having to start from scratch.
“Consider owning a franchise,” Britton advises fellow veterans exploring entrepreneurship. “It’s a great way to run and own a business without having to recreate the wheel. And never sell your military experience short—it translates to business in more ways than you think.”
Service Beyond the Uniform
For Britton, running a business isn’t just about the bottom line—it’s about making a difference. Whether mentoring other leaders, serving on nonprofit boards like Bethany Christian Services or supporting health care through Spectrum Health’s Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, he remains mission-driven in every arena of life. His advice to veterans reflects this ethos: “Be a servant. Listen, include, but when a decision needs to be made—own it.”
With a love for hospitality, an unwavering work ethic and a deep sense of purpose, Britton continues to set the bar for what veteran leadership looks like in business. At Kilwins, he’s not just running a franchise—he’s building a legacy of joy, resilience and impact, one scoop and sweet at a time.
