NAAAS Multicultural Conference: A Major Success

An outstanding multicultural, multi-ethnic conference was held in Dallas, Texas, February 17-22, 2020. This significant event was hosted by the National Association of African American Studies & Affiliates (National Association of Hispanic and Latino Studies, National Association of Native American Studies, and International Association of Asian Studies).

Over the course of six days, the joint associations served as host to 638 professionals from across the United States, and seventeen foreign countries. Each of the professionals presented a research paper and/or poster presentation that related to one or more of the ethnic associations sponsoring the conference.

Topics included diverse issues associated with immigration, civil rights, gender and women’s rights, role and responsibilities of government, President Trump and the minority community, education trends in the minority community, urbanization, racism, health issues, business, criminal justice system, internationalization of the curriculum, and success stories that bridge the cultural divide.

More than one hundred students from across the nation made a standard and/or poster presentation. Most of the participants were members of an honors society, McNair Scholar, or another recognized academic agency.Thirty-one of the students submitted papers for the Pansy Elizabeth Jacobs Jackson Student Research Competition. All of the student participants were recognized at the closing luncheon and select papers were honored with cash awards.

Multiple research sessions were scheduled throughout the day, with adequate time periods to experience fine art exhibits, book fair, and numerous vendors. The national organization also provided more than 7,000 journals for sharing and distribution. Nineteen publishing houses supported conference attendees with a broad array of literature.

International representation was quite visible throughout the week. Scholars wearing native clothing from South Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, England, and Botswana, engaged with U.S. delegates across disciplines.

Conference attendees also had the opportunity to explore scholarly endeavors and international projects sponsored by NAAAS & Affiliates. Board members met with interested conference participants to share information related to projects in Colombia, China, Mongolia, Brazil, South Africa, and several other countries.

The multiple educational and scholarly endeavors/projects are available to all interested persons who hold correlating credentials. The 2020 conference ranks as one of the most successful in the history of NAAAS & Affiliates, and as a foundation for future conferences.
